Rather than the traditional way of eating 年糕 that is by pan frying with egg, why not try to sandwich the 年糕 with a slice of sweet potato and yam.

How about a al fresco dining, unique food and most importantly the price is not expensive(less than S$10 per dish). Yup, came across a moroccan restaurant @ bussorah street servicing tagine food (stews cooked in tagine earthenware). Chicken Kebabs

Just put up some of the food trial @ Yuen Long, take the west rail line to 元朗 (yuen long) station then transfer to light rail to 大堂道 (tai tong road). Do email to me if you need a copy of this food trail map.

In Singapore during the chinese new year time, you must go to restaurants to eat this dish "Lo Hei/Yusheng" (撈起/鱼生). To me this is like a salad with salmon, radish, carrot, giner, chinese parsley, peanuts, sesame seeds, crackers, five spice powder ...etc the ingredients may vary with restaurant. Before you eat, you have to say some auspicious words to do the tossing and to mark the start of new year, higher you toss, higher is your fortunes.
Yusheng ( 鱼生)
年年有余 - abundance - raw fish
和气生财 - harmony and wealth - lettuce
步步高升 - eminence - carrot
旺事如意 - success - radish
招财进宝 - prosperity - chilli
遍地黄金 - prosperity - crackers
金沙满堂 - prosperity - peanuts
鸿运当头 - good luck - ginger
大吉大利 - good luck - lime
五福临门 - good fortune - 5 spice powder
福运年年 - smooth life - oil
甜甜蜜蜜 - sweet year - plum sauce
祝牛年心想事成

This is one restaurant which you should go and visit even though it is very far. To go to this place you have to take the west rail line to Yuen Long station (元朗) then transfer to light rail to Tai Tong road (大堂道). The
only place to find traditional village/farmhouse food (圍村菜) and one and only place to eat 砵仔飯 (豬油撈飯 - lard mixed with rice). Do look out for my map on food @ Yuen Long.

Went with my friend to this place for dinner, a 煮抄 (zhi-char) stall which is nice and reasonable. Actually I am quite surprised to find this zhi-char tucked inside the coffeeshop/hokkien association. You will be surprised to find many people eating there once you go to the back of the coffeeshop. They served dinner starting from 4 pm onwards and do come early, the parking space is limited.
Must try - salt baked crab (look at the roe)............yummy

Another Hong Kong specialty food - 車仔麵 (Cart Noodle). This is something similar to what we have here which is 酿豆腐 (Yong Tofu), different is the toppings, in Hong Kong you can have 豬紅 (curdled pig's blood - NA in Spore), 豬大腸 (pig intestine), 蘿蔔 (radish), 燒賣 (siu mai) ...etc. This shop in 元朗 (yuen long) is famous for cart noodle, you can see that the queue is already forming even before the shop open. F.Y.I - the chilli is hot in this stall.

Had a seafood dinner with friends at Lau Fau Shan, it is just a small restaurant but I find the place is clean and comfortable unlike most of the restaurant where they tried to pack in as many table as possible. The must order dish is 椒豉大蝦 (pepper soya prawn), it has a unique taste and the prawn is big.

One of the best 冰鎮奶茶, if you come across this food chain, do remember to pop in for Hong Kong milk tea, really good (thick and milky). Oh they are the one that first came up with this style of chilled milk tea, which is good as it will not dilute the tea.
