(Nian Gao)

Rather than the traditional way of eating 年糕 that is by pan frying with egg, why not try to sandwich the  年糕 with a slice of sweet potato and yam.

Moroccan specialities

How about a al fresco dining, unique food and most importantly the price is not expensive(less than S$10 per dish). Yup, came across a moroccan restaurant @ bussorah street servicing tagine food (stews cooked in tagine earthenware).

Just put up some of the food trial @ Yuen Long, take the west rail line to 元朗 (yuen long) station then transfer to light rail to 大堂道 (tai tong road). Do email to me if you need a copy of this food trail map.

In Singapore during the chinese new year time, you must go to restaurants to eat this dish "Lo Hei/Yusheng" (撈起/鱼生). To me this is like a salad with salmon, radish, carrot, giner, chinese parsley, peanuts, sesame seeds, crackers, five spice powder ...etc the ingredients may vary with restaurant. Before you eat, you have to say some auspicious words to do the tossing and to mark the start of new year, higher you toss, higher is your fortunes.

和气生财  -  harmony and wealth - lettuce
鸿运当头  -  good luck - ginger
大吉大利  -  good luck - lime
五福临门  -  good fortune - 5 spice powder
福运年年  -  smooth life - oil
甜甜蜜蜜  -  sweet year - plum sauce

This is one restaurant which you should go and visit even though it is very far. To go to this place you have to take the west rail line to Yuen Long  station (元朗) then transfer to light rail to Tai Tong road (大堂道). The
only place to find traditional village/farmhouse food (圍村菜) and one and only place to eat 砵仔飯 (豬油撈飯 - lard mixed with rice). Do look out for my map on food @ Yuen Long.

鸡球大包 - nowadays you can hardly find this big pao in HK
奶皇馬拉糕 - must eat, very soft n everybody will grab this once out from the steamer
鬆化叉燒酥 - the skin is crispy n char chew is good

Went with my friend to this place for dinner, a 煮抄 (zhi-char) stall which is nice and reasonable. Actually I am quite surprised to find this zhi-char tucked inside the coffeeshop/hokkien association. You will be surprised to find many people eating there once you go to the back of the coffeeshop. They served dinner starting from 4 pm onwards and do come early, the parking space is limited.

Must try - salt baked crab (look at the roe)............yummy
